Stepping onto the balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica just after 7 p.m. local time, Pope Leo XIV addressed the throngs gathered in St. Peter’s Square with a message of peace. “Peace be with all of you”, he proclaimed. “I want this message of peace to enter your hearts, your families, and everyone, wherever they may be. Let us go forward, unafraid, united, hand in hand with God and with one another”.
Leo XIV also expressed gratitude to the College of Cardinals for entrusting him with the papacy and called upon the faithful to honor the legacy of his predecessor, the late Pope Francis.

From Chicago to the Vatican: A Life of Service

Born in Chicago 69 years ago, Pope Leo XIV holds degrees in mathematics from Villanova University and theology from the Catholic Theological Union in Chicago. He later pursued canon law studies at the Pontifical University of Saint Thomas Aquinas in Rome before his ordination as a priest in June 1982.
Much of Prevost’s ministry has been marked by international service. He spent a decade as a missionary in Trujillo, Peru, and later served as the bishop of Chiclayo from 2014 to 2023. His leadership roles culminated in his 2023 appointment as cardinal by Pope Francis and his position at the Vatican’s powerful office responsible for bishop appointments.

A Pope with a Missionary Heart

Despite his new role, Pope Leo XIV remains grounded in his missionary roots. In an interview with Vatican News shortly after becoming head of the Dicastery for Bishops, he said, “I still see myself as a missionary. My calling, like that of every Christian, is to be a missionary and to proclaim the Gospel wherever I go”.
Leo XIV is expected to carry forward many of Pope Francis’s reforms, with a particular emphasis on global inclusivity and service to the peripheries of the Catholic world. His election marks not only a geographical milestone but also signals continuity in the Church’s modern direction.

Breaking Tradition: An American Pope at Last

For years, the idea of an American pope was seen as improbable, given the United States’ global superpower status and the Vatican’s cautious stance on balancing international influence. However, Prevost’s moderate tone and extensive experience in Latin America and the Vatican made him a standout candidate among the papabile.
According to The Guardian, his election reflects the Church’s readiness to embrace new horizons while maintaining its core mission of faith and unity.
